Elevating Women At Spotify During Women’s History Month And Beyond
Throughout the month of March, we celebrate Women’s History Month, an annual opportunity to honor the achievements of Women around the globe, in a big way.
Selecting A Theme
As with most Cultural Moments we choose to amplify, choosing a theme is the best place to level set and ensure there’s alignment across all programming and events. For this particular Cultural Moment we work in collaboration with our largest Global Belonging Group (traditionally known as Employee Resource Groups), Women@ – a community for Women and Allies of Women at Spotify.
Spotify’s 2025 theme for Women’s History Month was Elevating the Women of Spotify. Some past themes have focused on celebrating the women in our industry, around the world, and in our personal lives who have shaped many of our bandmates. However, this year, we focused our work within Spotify, shining a spotlight on the incredible achievements and contributions of our bandmates and how we can all learn from their talents and journeys.
A True Global Celebration
Our Women@ Belonging Group is led by two Global Leads who work with a global committee of over 30 volunteers who lead the 19 local chapters, curating programming and belonging events within their own regions. We choose this structure as the local leads have insight to the needs and interests of their local communities.
We used this same approach for Women’s History Month. Once our Global Leads confirmed the theme – each local lead planned a range of programming including book clubs, mentorship chats, and volunteer engagements. This year we hosted in-person and virtual programming in Miami, London, New York, Stockholm, Los Angeles, Sydney, and beyond, with audiences of over 2,500 bandmates.
We ensured each geography had dedicated learning moments for bandmates. Events ranged from practical financial planning sessions and panels, and fireside chats featuring Spotify leaders who shared stories about their professional journeys, how to have influence in the workplace, and the key to building and shaping impactful teams, campaigns, and moments.
We hosted two Leadership Panels – one featuring Senior Women leaders at Spotify and another featuring Rising Women leaders at Spotify. Both panels were hybrid in-person and virtual opportunities for Spotifiers to connect with our leadership and each other, learn, and continue the conversations during a post-event Fika to create greater belonging. The Senior Women leadership panel featured a masterclass where the participants shared advice to help rising talent thrive in their careers, make difficult decisions, and make the best impression at work. They also discussed their commitments to shaping future talent and how they balance caring for themselves with work and home demands. The panel featuring our Rising Women Leaders had a slightly different focus and centered on how they were able to influence Spotify’s work and shape how we continue to innovate.
This balance of the current and future approach to leadership ensured a learning moment with practical ways to support how we’re elevating ourselves, our ways of working, and each other.
Business Led Cultural Moments
With the support of an Executive Sponsor, Cultural Moments like Women’s History Month provide a great opportunity to partner with the business. Prioritizing this work starts with the support and prioritization of an Executive Sponsor within the business. This kind of impactful and inclusive programming can help Spotifiers feel supported, encouraged, and like they belong. Overall, Cultural Moment celebrations can spark connection, drive performance, and inspire ideas that move us all forward.
Previously, the Equity, Diversity, and Impact Team has collaborated with our Advertising Business, Finance Team, and Legal Team to host programming in recognition of Women’s History Month. This year, we continued this approach with our Advertising Business hosting a “Women in Sports” day that featured inspiring talks from Women leaders, podcasters, and journalists from across the Advertising Business and Sports Industries within Spotify’s ecosystem (our creators and industry partners). This programming raised awareness about charitable organizations dedicated to Girls’s sports and how Spotifiers can support. There was also an opportunity for bandmates to get free headshots, providing them with a powerful image to accompany their new confidence after a day of learning.
In addition, our Product and Technology Team kept things on theme by hosting an inspiring and pun-filled event. They chose to connect their Women’s History Month celebration with Pi(e) Day and hosted a “Chat & Chill” where employees gather, monthly, to discuss and learn about a focused topic. The team wanted to honor not only Pi(e) Day but the incredible Women PI-Oneers who’ve shaped their careers and our industry. Spotify Product and Tech leaders shared stories about the Spotify Women who inspire them, offered advice, and highlighted more amazing accomplishments by Women in tech — all delivered in a fast, fun demo-style format with an assortment of pie for everyone to enjoy.
Planning for Moments of Celebration & Joy
Quite possibly the most important moments of the month came in the form of an employee storytelling initiative, where Spotifiers took a moment to shout out dozens of Women at Spotify who inspire them. Every day of March, a band member wrote about a member of the Spotify community who was deserving of recognition, on the Women@ Slack channel. During the month, Spotifiers amplified design leaders, colleagues they described as creative, kind, funny, passionate, honest, and supportive, bandmates in Singapore, Women in Advertising, partners, and collaborators, to name just a few. Even in a distributed environment, Slack has served as a proverbial soapbox and each day the messages garnered joyful responses and replies, echoing the kind words and once again deepening a sense of connection and belonging for those looking for true community, keeping Spotify and its band members moving forward as we built a Spotify for all during Women’s History Month and beyond.
